Rape & Sexual Violence

One of the issues that we work with at Jigsaw; is the aftermath of rape and sexual violence. Whether this is current or abuse that happened in childhood. Whether male or female.

Over this time we have also witnessed the devastating effects of further secondary injury caused by those in the helping professions who lack the correct skills, knowledge or training. Being judged, blamed or dismissed by someone who has no idea of the trauma that person is going through can be and is devastating. An issue from which we regularly pick up the pieces.

Working with the Trauma of Rape and Sexual Violence: A Guide for Professionals Book.

Like metaphoric sunburn, the effects of rape and sexual violence are hidden below the surface. Whilst on the outside all is shiny and new, underneath, inside the person who is affected a deep smouldering burns through each day and each night as they try and make sense of what has happened to them.

Rape, sexual violation, sexual abuse, paedophilia and other such offences are not about the person who has been targeted – they are actions that have been perpetrated on that person. People must never be judged on what has happened or been done to them, not ever.
